What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) means “Universal Life Energy”.  It is a gentle and compassionate touch therapy.  Reiki originated in Japan in the late 1800’s and its practice became popular in the U.S. in the early 1970’s.  Since then, Reiki has flourished around the world.  It is now practiced in many world-renowned hospitals, clinics and private settings.  Nurses and doctors are among its many practitioners.  On-going Reiki studies are proving it to be extremely beneficial.  Compassionate touch has helped many people cope during times of added stress, illness and trauma.  Reiki is not a religion or specific belief.

What is a Reiki session like?

A person may sit or lie down, fully clothed, during Reiki.  The receiver needs only to relax.  Some may want to listen to comforting music or have someone else present during their session.  The practitioner would then place their hands slightly above or gently on the receiver.  Many receivers of Reiki energy report feeling calm, peaceful and more positive after their session.

How will Reiki help me?

Stressful life situations and loss are experienced by everyone.  This could leave us feeling isolated and overwhelmed, thereby taking a toll on our general health and especially our emotional state.  The role of the Reiki practitioner is to accompany you along the process toward feeling better overall.  A practitioner does not heal you, but encourages your body, mind and spirit in a positive way so that healing may take place.  Children also enjoy Reiki’s benefits.

In summary, Reiki is a simple, yet powerful compassionate touch therapy which is practiced successfully worldwide to help those at all stages of life.  With each passing year, it is becoming more accepted and understood, especially by those in healthcare.  It is suitable for everyone and has only positive side effects.

Reiki is a popular request at hospice facilities.

Children also enjoy Reiki's many benefits.
